Established in 1997, XL was set up by BWG Wholesale Division in response to a demand for a local retail concept that offered support whilst allowing retailers to retain their independence and community identity.

Known originally as XL Stop & Shop, in 2009 a new brand identity was rolled out. The brand name was shortened to simply ‘XL’ as well as upgrading the overall brand and store image. XL is now one of the fastest growing symbol groups in Ireland, with store numbers surpassing 200. Backed by the buying power of BWG Foods and the convenience of 22 Value Centres nationwide, XL is a progressive neighbourhood store format.
